That was good.
The deaths were effective story-wise and emotionally. They mattered to the characters that are left, which reflects well on them and shows that Smokey is the villain Jacob said he was - something smiting redshirts doesn't do to the same extent and motivates the survivors to smite Smokey and the Candidate to stay.
Sayid got the redemptive death that was his best possible ending in this 'verse and didn't kill Des, as I thought he didn't. Hopefully dying to try saving the others and choosing not to kill when told to will bleed through into the Sidesways Sayid's fate and things will get better in his life there.
Sun and Jin got a death where they had done everything they could to save and get back to each other but its not to be in this 'verse, but there's no doubt that they love and loved each other and that will presumably bleed through too. Killing them now after they got the reunions, the declarations and the ring going back on his finger meant that all these and the death scene didn't get short-changed or thrown away in a rushed final episode. The same for the grief and mourning of the survivors. We got to see it, that they cared and the dead were mourned and we get that with them and to like those mourning and crying even more. All of which sure beats coconut jokes and smiling.
The others all trying to save the trapped and injured reflected well on them as characters but also moves the plot. There had to be deaths so characters we love had to die. There also have to be even more - so we are desperate for the Sidesways Verse to be the last universe standing so our fave characters get to be alive and in generally better places. Without widespread character slaughter and characters going nuts (like Claire) its harder to want the newbie versions to be there as the curtain comes down rather than the versions we've followed for all these years.
This incarnation of Jack works a lot better but I did guess that there would be a bomb in the daypac. Moral of the tale, always check the content of luggage handed to you by smoke monsters.
So I'm expecting more deaths, but also satisfying open endings in the finale where we know the likely ending, like a shaggy haired cop meeting a nice doctor lady for coffee and I don't think I'll be disappointed.

And I thought the deaths were really well done, and after the travesty shuffle-them-off-screen and cheer shoe-shopping "Chosen" I appreciate actually seeing characters take time to mourn.
Hurley's single tear breaking down into sobs. It worked. God, it worked. I was a puddle.
Though, I do have to say that for a moment there I seriously wondered whether Jack was going to give Sawyer mouth to mouth.
And, I agree with your point that this makes it even easier to root for the sideways!verse to be the last verse standing. However, that's been my vote since I started hoping that Juliet is having coffee with James Ford.
Awesome episode. Heartbreaking, but awesome.

Hugo! *pets*
Jack should have, if only to give the slashers a prezzie.
Jaliet for the win!
Totally:)

From your keyboard to Lindelof/Cuse's ears. If this happens I will be SO HAPPY, so much so that they can do anything else they like (as in kill everyone in the Island-verse) and I'll be fine with it.
I'd also like to see Charlotte/Daniel and Desmond/Penny reunited in the Alterna-Verse (we already know Jin and Sun are there), but that might be asking for too much. If I get James and Juliet together again, I'll be satisfied.
