Aka the BBC3 one, Dead Man Walking.
Okay, I freely acknowledge that my Whedon injuries are showing in this one.
The killed character brought back with the other mitten placed on the wall way back in S1.
Actual permanent cost of bringing said character back both to the character himself but also to those bringing them back and innocent bystanders.
Dead character walking has actual death related issues like not being able to digest, sleep and shag. Actual makes sense , plus, sure beats a molecular sunburn and an on-going program of self indulgent whining/ taking it out on others.
No heeeeeeveen rubbish/shoring up wishful thinking or imaginary friends in the sky. All while keeping an exploration of scary things that can come out of the unknown when monkeying around with natural processes.
Owen has no soul now - he thinks - and his team-mates care about him and didn't make mall jokes over his room temp body at the end or at the start with the autopsy.
Owen keeps his inner git and snark even when he's being heroic and saving the day and stopping Gwen hogging his two minutes.
And he called Tosh on the reality of last minute declarations to the dead - though in this case the writers and the actress do make me believe her, love her, care for her and hope these two crazy kids can make it. Which way beats hoping for being eaten by feral cats/swallowed up by red hot lava.
Owen also called Jack on wanting to save him only to use him and Jack denied it and I believed him. Which, again, so much more satisfying than a weekly does of kick in the teeth.
Death as a force waiting in the unknown for when the natural process is screwed with tops a pathetic gift with purchase.
Moving hands are never not scary. I jumped when it got Martha.
Creepy children that know stuff (has a Layla Miller moment) are never not scary and I can't help thinking that that girl was Faith, the one that beat Death last time.
Owen working out the way to beat Death and be a good Doctor to the kid with leukaemia was also good show not tell of who he is. Especially combined with the kiss of wanting it anyway-get Tosh out of harms way was also most welcome.
The relationship between the Weevils and death both small case and capital letter was established and made them much more interesting.
The promo makes it look like Owen's exploring the consequences of being dead and there are consequences to that behaviour. Me like consequences.
And Ianto poised to tackle Evil Mitten with ice hockey stick.
I did like it that there wasn't as much Martha worship this week, as it got very OTT, but there was good continuity across the episodes and both series instead, especially in the Owen/Gwen hug that didn't discuss to death their thing last year but hung on it.
Martha's old age make-up was so much worse than the Doctor's last year.
I liked that they acknowledged that bringing back Owen did kill people, but I like it all the more because there wasn't a big cheesy speech at the end about it but the implications that they have to make up for it was just left there.
Some cheesy moments, especially the Ancient Martha and multiplied Weevils, but all in all, I liked it and Matt (Impossible Planet/Satan Pit) did another good scary one.
And I'm also glad that they're repeating Being Human after it, as I enjoyed the a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost share a house, with side orders of Bitey, vampire politics and Harry Potter sorting conversations when I saw it on Monday.

So it's like he's been charged up by the 2nd risen mitten and it's depleting?
Hm. I wonder who/what will intercede on Owen's behalf?
It sounds as if Martha didn't have much to do in this ep. I wonder what the future plans are for her?
(no subject)
They seem to have left him that way as a contrast to Jack, who we know won't deplete for millions of years. Owen might get thirty years or thirty minutes. They justdon't know yet, but next ep seems set on exploring the consequences still further.
She didn't and I'm not sure. They seem to have set her up as a potential long term replacement for Owen in the medical officer niche who knows the rest of the team too, but whether they'll act on that who knows but Rusty and he ain't telling.

I like the idea of a contrast between Owen and Jack. I also like that we got some Jack/Owen moments in this one as they have been few and far between this series. But poor Owen -- no sex! I wonder what this means for Oosh. Or Towen. I am indeed shallow in my concerns but in my own defense it seems to me that Owen's emotional arc almost requires him to pursue some sort of mature romantic relationship to help heal his mummy issues.
It's very Angel I guess to explore what will essentially need to be a platonic relationship (if it moves forward at all). Heh. After Owen gets over the crisis of trying to figure out how to live feeling as if his soul has been damaged (that was the sense I got of things but may be wrong) I guess this won't help Owen's relationship with Ianto when he eventually finds out how much sex Ianto is having with Jack. No much Ianto in this ep but that makes sense as I've gotten the feeling that Owen really doesn't care much for/doesn't respect him.
I'm not sure I like the notion of Martha. I do like the character but she's just DW to me not TW so it feels a bit like she takes over. I must say that the actor is quite wonderful, though.
Thank you for bearing with questions from someone who hasn't seen the ep. Hopefully when I get home from travelling tomorrow I can watch it. I too will have Buffy issues but it sounds from what you've said as if they will be manageable.

They've been doing some great exploration of the characters by shadow doubling, the more so since its been explorations of both characters rather than just hte lead a la ME. I hope O/T do try adn get there. At least she's not calling him horrible names and loves him, so there's hope. Eeep. Has said the hope word - has more ME flashbacks of traumaness.
This was definitely an Owen ep, as it should be, and it makes sense that both Ianto and Martha were sidelined as they're just not that important to him/tied to him as characters. But it was good that they weren't ignored.
I'm not sure about Martha in the mix either, especially with the female lead impications it would bring.
Rhys is adorable.
I found it cathartic as it seems to be another example of Team Cardiff taking what Joss got wrong and fixing it.

Moving hands are never not scary. So true.
I thought the same thing about that girl. Actually my first thought was 'Test Card Girl', but whatever. :)
Um...what's Being Human?
(no subject)
Being Human is a drama about about a vampire, a werewolf nada ghost sharing a flat and dealing with their issues,

Interesting that aged Martha still retained her figure.

They had enough problems with the old age make-up for her that I'm glad they didn't go fat suit bursting her clothes too.

Shades of Satan Pit, Bubba Ho-Tep and even it's own Suzie episode. How derivative could it get?
Plus, waaaay too much Owen.

I have really like the Owen/Tosh slow build up this year - and think both of their acting has been brilliant
(no subject)
It's been a really well structured arc and they've both done a good job with it.

Hee! Too true.
I can't help thinking that that girl was Faith, the one that beat Death last time.
Hmm, was it ever explicitly stated that Faith is immortal? Or is this particular little girl an incarnation?
