Torchwood - Fragments

OMG! I have to wait two weeks for the finale. I can't wait that long. I needs it now.
So much to enjoy, so well paced, so much backstory and character/ship work.
Loved it.

James appearance! Looking gorgeous and pissed off and hurt by Jack, with all the time he has, not wanting to spend time with him. So he made the Team go Boom. Loves.
Accompanied by Grey for that extra dose of Angsty Manpain for Jack to go with having a building blown up on top of him pain.

But there was so much to love.

Gwen not being blown up by virtue of oversleeping due to the simple human connection to the real world that is Rhys.
Rhys giving her a lift to the team of blown-upness and so not only helping her save the others but being shown Jack coming back from the dead.
Jack at just before 1900 going by the clothes of the lesbian memsahibs of the Empire at their most formidable with side order of mad ninja skills who were running Torchwood Cardiff at the time. Rogue, seriously fucked-up Jack desperate to find the Doctor, get fixed and kiss him before he kills him - how could I not love that. A number to pin on just how many deaths he's had and as we know he feels each one *Ouch*. A century as a field agent -which explains who sent him to chase the Night Travellers last week. All those files, all those dead colleagues and bosses, all those dodgy blowfish that were bad sorts but not deserving of being blown away by the ruthlessly pragmatic. We got to learn that he inherited Cardiff on New Year's Even 1999 after the boss murdered the team after looking into a pocketwatch. And I really want to know what Time Lord that one came from. We didn't get a date on old Tim in Family of Blood, did we? Wither way, hopes for Romana. I wonder if the girl that read the cards - who I think is Faith the Death Beater - looked into it too or if she's a pocketwatched Time Lady in an immortal form.

But we didn't just get Jack backstory, we got how Jack recruited the others, with varying degrees of care (Owen), pragmatism (Tosh) and lust (Ianto) all mixed with the goal of reshaping Torchwood Cardiff into something different but still doing the job of saving the Earth while waiting for the big change this century - and having something to do while waiting out the time Faith warned him about. All of which showed his character as the others perceived him.

In order of flashback.

Tosh, the UNIT worker blackmailed into retrieving confidential blueprints and making a sonic device by having her mum kidnapped, so we got shown Tosh the hard working quiet one who nevertheless can do both the Sydney Bristow running around looking hot but also the Marshall Flinkman tech bit of making a blueprint that doesn't work work because Tosh is just that awesome. But as UNIT is also smart and awesome in this set-up they were on to her and nabbed her and the mum-nappers. I'm sure some people will have problems with UNIT Gitmo-ing a traitor within their midst. I know that Mike Yates got the chance to leave quietly after Dinos and to redeem himself in Spiders, but that was, despite the Cold War, a fluffier era. More importantly, it was also an era where not only did the same man that did the kind thing for Mike blow up the Silurians but also covered up the Yeti in the underground, the Cybermen invasion, the Autons breaking out of shop windows... Especially in a post 9/11 world with real life rendition and Gitmo, its in character.

The time Tosh spends in isolation in a terrible cell, with no news of the mum she sacrificed her loyalty for, and the deal she makes with Jack to serve for five years in return for a clean slate on top of the girl we saw before does also explain a lot of her issues. She doesn't trust easily and has been damaged by isolation and bad treatment, so takes standard steps to repel boarders. Seeing her flashbacks with Owen's backstory makes sense of her attraction to him - its rooted in the man he was before he was hurt. The man that loved and committed to a woman that was badly damaged by what was thought to be a terrible, worsening illness and really went to bat for her. That's the man Tosh wants and sees still there beneath the hurt and damaged person he is now. And Tosh the girl that was there first and never found a file she didn't peek into knows it.

Onto Owen, himself. I love that they remembered that he was fragile and cared. As for his backstory, Poor Owen. In love with a young doctor who had been diagnosed with the earliest Alzheimers in medical history but going ahead with the wedding and loving her even when she couldn't remember his name and insisting on test after test until he found a way to save her. Only he couldn't because it was an alien incubating in her brain and it killed her and the doctors and nurses treating her. And then finding Jack there and no one believing him afterwards. Then finding Jack again in the cemetery and chasing after him for both answers and payback, and giving us insight into why Jack hired the exhaustive researcher as well as the doctor that cares and can never save enough to save himself. And got the man that scarred by losing the woman he loved was scared at being hurt again and found it easier to go for casual that couldn't hurt him - until he didn't, with Diane, and it did. No wonder he's so wary with Tosh. Poor Owen.

Suzie mention in flashback case:) Flashback case of Ianto. A Ianto that 21 months ago was an ex Torchwood London researcher desperate to get into Torchwood Cardiff and telling Jack that Lisa was dead. A man that stalked Jack offering to be anything, to work for free, a man that Jack wanted out of Cardiff and threatened with retconning, even after him saving his life on their first meeting, until Jack fell on him during the pterodactyl hunt when he got hit by the I fancy the pants of this person and hired him. Going by that and Ianto starting it by hitting on Jack via the Coat and Jack returning it via Ianto's suit I'm thinking they have been fucking for 21 months. And going by Sad! Emo! Ianto! Face on his hiring it was something he did for the purpose of getting Lisa into the place where the scavenged machinery from Torchwood One was rather than loving Jack. It makes sense of Jack's sense of betrayal in Cyberwoman and Ianto's word to Jack in that. It also makes sense that as their relationship was sexual from the start that's how they've found their way through that and the other events they've been through and how they've got to where they are now. That they've run their relationship through sex also makes sense of the game playing. They work it out through sexual action rather than talking through their relationship.

Myfanwy! Has been there 21 months, loves dark chocolate and was caught by Jack (who wanted her as a guard dog for the hub) and Ianto. Her taking Jack for a flying lesson - so to speak - is significantly responsible for Janto. Torchwood One had dinosaur nuts to feed time errant beasties. Wonders if they and Primeval bulk buy to get discounts.

Now, I wants the finale!

It sounds amazing. That's two good episodes in a row. It sounds like the end of the series will be as strong as the start. If I don't see this episode soon, I will die.

It was really good. The wait is going to kill me. They've certainly set the finale up well and the stellar improvement they've done with the show this year certainly bodes well, especially with the same writer finishing the arc.

Wishes you a fast download.

We got to learn that he inherited Cardiff on New Year's Even 1999 after the boss murdered the team after looking into a pocketwatch.

I think it was a woman's locket (there's a brief mention of a locket in one of the new novels)

It might be. My eyesight's not that good, though I do have a watch like it.

To be honest, I couldn't tell which one it was even after repeated viewings. Sure looked like a pocket watch though.

Even so. Has it been established that a Time Lord phylactery has to be a fob watch? Or is that just the only form we've seen so far?

[identity profile] paratti.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems to be the form we've seen, but like a functioning TARDIS I'm sure it could take other forms to fit in in other cultures.

It was a lovely episode, wasn't it? I really enjoyed the background they gave the team, especially Owen's seeing as how our first impression of him was someone rather selfish and amoral. It really wasn't until the Diane arc that I came to love Owen.

I'm excited about the finale, too! Can't wait to see what Captain John has up his fancy coat sleeves for our boy. :)

It all made such lovely sense.

It's going to be so good:)
