Wolvie and EmmaAndo, or as the episode set up we will get last week's future coming to pass.

It's that I've seen this story before aspect with Hiro and Ando and the Avengers/X-Men meeting over what to do with Wanda that answered a question I've been pondering - why this show doesn't produce much fic when it has characters, archetypes and dynamics fandom would normally be all over? I know already that all the way through the run I'd been seeing characters, stories, world-building features and dynamics that I'd seen before in comics as well as the films and shows based on them. Then it struck me, that's why there's not much in the way of fans taking the stories in different directions - it's quite simply because for many of us, we've already read those stories elsewhere, the works been done for us over decades of storytelling. We know these worlds, the 'what if's' that fic thrives on, the alternative universes - they've been done. And while there are only a limited number of categories of stories when it comes to these characters and this world, it's pretty much all been done before, so why would it produce a lot of fic?

Which is why so much of what little fic there is is slash/femslash. That's the one thing that the comics don't give us.

Other than the vibeyness.

So next season we get Danny/Luke and Misty/Colleen?

Well, of course, I don't produce or read a lot of fanfic out of the Bverse or SGA, but, for me, I'm just enjoying the storytelling that's going on, that I don't feel the need to seek out other stories. And it's not because I've read it all before because I haven't been a comic book reader since I was a teenager many, many eons ago.

I just love the story as it is. :D

They are doing a nice job telling it.

I'm this way. That's always been the way I've approached Farscape. I didn't need additional material to the text. I was happy with the text.

Admittedly, every time I've been spurred to fanfic it's been more out of frustration with a series than pure enjoyment (which isn't to say I'm not a fan. If I didn't love the series I became frustrated with, I'd simply turn off. It takes a special combination of love and dissatisfaction to send me to fanfic... which is probably why I still like BtVS fanfic after all these years. :)

Yes, exactly. I loved the story (for the most part) that I got from the Bverse, but, oh yeah, there was a helluva lot of frustration there, too. Which is why I can write gen as well as romantic fic in the verse.

With SGA, I'm never going to get my McShep romance, so I need to create it or seek it out in fanfic. Also, since it's not a true linear story, there's room there to fill it in with other adventures.

I feel like, at this point, Heroes is very straight forward story-wise, and I'm happy to let the creator lead me wherever he wants. And since I have no romantic horse in that race, I don't need to seek that out either. Maybe, somewhere in the future, I'll feel the need to flesh out the story, but not right now.

Yeah, it also struck me that Heroes isn't big with the shipping, which also tends to spur a lot of fanfic. I can certainly enjoy a show without shipping anyone, but ships and ship-wars tend to spur lots of fanfic.

True. It has been nicely un-frustrating.

I only got into the FicVerse after the end of Buffy because I refused to accept the story I was given. I must say, it is very freeing not to be subject to the whims of a writers' room. And with Trek and B7 stories, there was a lot of stuff that the writers weren't allowed to deal with, only suggest, so the fan stories filled in real gaps.

I've gathered from Fandom_Wank and from Heroes LJ (I've forgotten its name) that there's a fair amount of fic being written. I've never noticed fandoms to be hampered by repetitive natures of shows. I'd put its being more rare based on it's younger and it hasn't yet had a summer hiatus. That tends to be what usually kicks fanfic into gear.

I was going my what I see pop up or recced off my FL. I know it's a limited sample but I've been surprised not to see anything much in the way of fic popping up.

That's part of it, but I'm always inclined to think that the lack of an obvious romantic pairing is what leads to a lack of fic. Plus, there are just so many characters that it's been tough for any of them to break free of their archetypes and start feeling like real people.

I think that's a part of it. There are some couples though even taking out the Ptrelli clan memebers - DL/JNicki for instance and there's not been much done there.

I really think a lot of it does boil down to the shipping. I mean, we have to face the fact that most fanfic revolves around ships and Heroes is not a shippy show, at least not to the extent that a certain pairing inspires someone so much that they feel compelled to spend hours and hours writing about it. I haven't noticed any shipper-style fanwars, either, other than the few diatrabes against people who still like Claire/Peter despite the fact that they are related (and really, come on, the way those two actors look at one another is kinda pervy, but that's a tangent.) So, basically that narrows the field down to gen for the most part, and it's oddly difficult to write gen about a show that relies more heavily on plot than any other element. Hell, we get a new twist every week, so the fic is pretty much going to become non-canon-compliant before you've even finished it.

Also very true.

That's interesting. If the show is good enough that it is telling the story(ies) in a satisfing way and not spurring fans to write fic that fixes problems, it's definitely worth checking out. Or are you saying that it's kind of boring?

Looking at the comments, it seems to me that if there is no shipping, then it is highly unlikely that there will be a lot of fanfic. When it comes right down to it, I think fanfic is driven by sex, like so many other things. ;). Many people have a need for romance. Relationships are incredibly interesting to pick apart, and are a real driving force in a lot of fiction. The shipping fic always outnumbers the gen. Anyway, I just had this on my mind because shipping has caused so many problems in the PotC fandom lately, and made me think about why shipping is such a driving force, for good and bad. Although there are many interesting things to write about, a good fic needs a good character, and it's always interesting to see how someone reacts to other people -- and so it goes.

At any rate, I'm interested in checking out Heroes. It was on a bad night for me, but I want to try to catch it next season, and it would be nice if there were some reruns before that, to try to hook new viewers -- I'm guessing there will be.

It's entertaining and moreish. It's not a great work - it's too derivative for that - but it does interestign and fun things with the comic book tropes.

There's lots of relationships in Heroes but it hasn't been OTP-ish, probably as the characters that ping tend to be related.

It's a show that will benefit from watching on DVD as it is heavily serialised.
