Torchwood - Something Borrowed

Aw, I really enjoyed that:)

There are good examples of The Wedding From Hell Episode and ones so atrociously appalling that they sever a girl's last strand of tolerance for the main character and so trash many of the others that there is no way back. Then there are ones like this. Ones that left me liking all the characters more and gave me oodles of things I really wanted and liked and combined the simple human drama with lovely character moments and great humour leavening/highlighting.

Where to start?
Rhys! With a Chainsaw! About to slice and dice the Evol Alien About to rip Gwen to pieces and who disssed his mum.

The bride - capping a bitch with a full clip from behind the bouquet. How could I not love that.

Ianto cutting in on Jack's dance with the bride to have his own dance with Jack. About which bride's dress, he was definitely combining his usual ultra efficient - the neckline and colour were lovely - and his inner bitch -the middle was very sausagesque.

Owen asking Tosh to dance. Complete with both his watch the dead man dance and her looking lovely and remarking on the problem with the 'til death do up part bit.

Gwen being honest with Rhys, who was so understandably upset but so supportive of her decisions and her telling him how much she loved him. While

I didn't mind the Gwack element because it does exist and she is tempted and she is human and fallible but she still loves Rhys and wants to be married to him, alien preg notwithstanding.

Gwen being honest with her dad and having that moment of them knowing that she was telling the truth - even if their own piece of mind/Torchwood security means the whole (surviving) wedding party lost their memory of the wedding.
I didn't have problems with their use of the wake up pregnant trope. It wasn't posited as a punishment for being sexual, as poor Cordy kept suffering. It could have happened to any live member of the team, an innocent passer by that chose to go to the loo at the wrong time and it was structured as bite rather than rape in the actual attack. The fact that the bittee was Gwen worked as it had to because waking up pregnant with an alien shape shifter with a taste for human flesh was the maximum human drama choice. And that is what makes good telly.

She also didn't feel like a victim. She had too much agency and took enough of her own calls and steps towards saving herself to fall into that trap. While the fact that the others weren't castrated/dumbed down to boost her was a definite bonus.

Jack and Ianto backstory. WEDDING PHOTO! OMG! Which was both OMG and an excellent choice in warning the audience about applying OTPing to an omni show. Plus Ianto dad was a tailor and could identify inside leg measurements by stride - and they;re going to try it out, and they were going to kiss before the interruption. But DANCE! Aw, they got a dance.

And Tosh has Issues, which we knew, but showing her running and taking extreme precautions to repel non-safe potential boarders was telling.
Which admittedly did save the best man from Curse of Tosh's Dead Significant Others.

Even if Mervyn the Music wasn't quite so lucky. Worst Blowjob Ever.

How much do I love that they didn't fall into the mistake of making Tosh a bridesmaid. I've seen too many shows try that with Wedding Eps when they haven't established a close enough friendship between bride and fellow regulars for it to either work or for the characters to behave as a good bridesmaid when it all goes to hell. This worked better. Tosh turning up with the practical things to help the situation and being there for Gwen made the two women closer and we got them talking in a way that really worked and felt organic. While the fact that Gwen has kept enough girlfriends to have a fun hen night worked in showing that she has kept her ties outside Torchwood and the extent to which she is able to relate to them.

In fact as the whole team worked together to help out/minimise the damage by staying away until it became essential not only made them look better as a team but also as people/characters that deserve the love.

Especially when they're wedding fairies putting things better with Retcon +6 and BFGs.

Speaking of the BFG, both it and the singularity scalpel were brought out just as I thought not what they need is... which is nice writing.

The episode also managed enough light and humour in the wedding and the way people bitch and try to pull and get pissed and things go wrong that it added the necessary lightness after the Owen Death Arc while not forgetting the consequences of that, from Dead Man Dancing to Owen having only one fully functional hand so someone else had to press the buttons. Mm... Consequences, I love 'em and they've really kept those coming.

And the good eps.

I loves my show.

Which admittedly did save the best man from Curse of Tosh's Dead Significant Others.

Had to hop in here because I spent most of Banana Boat's scenes shouting 'RUN! SAVE YOURSELF!' to him...

Me too:)

If only for poor Rhys's sake. He was already going through so much that I didn't want him to lose his best man as well.

It was nice to see them reuse something that had worked before, e.g. the Singularity Scalpel, rather than pulling a new rabbit out of the hat. And I couls see the Retcon coming and was so glad they didn't chicken out from using it.

It really had to be used and it had the benefit of giving that lovely scene of the whole team (including Rhys) against the background of those they were saving from worry and allowing the happy couple to choose to keep their wedding memories including alll the bad bits. I really liked it.

Excellent observations all, which is why reading your reviews always deepens my experience when watching the show. Thanks!

Rhys! With a Chainsaw!

Moment of joy!

WEDDING PHOTO! OMG! Which was both OMG and an excellent choice in warning the audience about applying OTPing to an omni show.

Yup. It was kind of perfect.

Aw, they got a dance.

Made me happy, it did.

I loves my show.

And so do I...
