It's also why the vampire episode of vampires choosing of their own free will to give up human blood was so important, not just in making yours truly incredibly happy at finally getting my claws on a free will universe. The vampires in this verse aren't like the exorcisable humans posessed by demons we've seen the demon and his spawn use. They've been changed but it's become an intrinsic part of their biology. Just as for a biological half demon like Sam it's something that's part of him and not something a bit of drawing and some Latin can get rid of. And Sam is going to have to choose between his blood kin. He'll go with the human half that nurtured him as he's in the credits and also a hero but to do that he has to live in a free will universe where biological demons can choose to do this, so this lot of writers have created one.

It's just as much a function of the universe and the issues the writers are willing to address/avoid as was BTVS essentially destroying their own show to run away from even asking the questions about free will redeeming demons and the morality or otherwise of slayage. Here the question also arises and has to arise given the intrinsic nature of one of only two main protaganists and so it can't be avoided. And far from running scared they're actually going there and doing a bang up job with it and I look forward to the lake of angst that will result from Dean un-burdoning himself.
